The iconic Border-Gavaskar trophy 2024-25 is just one day away. The entire cricket world is under the Test match fever. Both teams are doing their last-time preparations. The fever has now crossed the boundary lines. The cricket greats are predicting bigs ahead of the series. Ricky Ponting reacted to Ravi Shastri’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy prediction. The Australian legend shared his thoughts and offered more clarity on his perspective regarding Shastri’s remarks.
Shastri’s Remarks and Ponting’s Reply
After a while, the prestigious Border-Gavaskar trophy is coming back. Test cricket is all set to witness another thrilling series. The cricket fans of India and Australia are ready to experience another thrilling edition of the rivalry. Before the series starts, the cricket greats are sharing their views. When former Indian cricketer and coach Ravi Shastri was asked about his prediction, he predicted a 3-1 series result in India’s favor.
After Shastri’s view, Ponting was asked over his take. While replying to this, the Australian great remembered a light moment from the previous edition of the iconic series. He shared how his prediction backfired on the Australian side.
He said, “I think I might have said 2-1 at the start. And then Sunny looked at me and said, ‘It will be 2-1, but it will be 2-1 (in favor of) India.’ And I thought there was no way in the world that they could bounce back after losing the way they did in Adelaide. But they did.”
Later he added, “Sunny got the better of me there. So I hope Ravi doesn’t get the better of me this time. So I’m going to stick with the 3-1 Australia.”
Revealing Reasons Behind His Border Gavaskar Trophy Prediction
After predicting the probable result, Ponting shared reasons behind his comment. Before stepping into the series, Team India faced a huge setback in their recently ended Test series against New Zealand. In that three-match Test series, they faced a whitewash on their home soil. They struggled with their form in the entire home series. Along with that, Indian captain Rohit Sharma will miss the first Test.
While talking about his prediction, Ponting said, “India will be pretty certain of what team they’re going to play (in Perth). They’ve known for a while that Rohit probably wasn’t going to be here. They’ve probably known for a while that Bumrah was going to be captain. So they’ve probably known what holes they’ve needed to fill. So they’ll be reasonably settled.”
Later he added, “But I just think there’s potential for more disruption through their campaign with Sharma coming back and whatever else. So I’ll stick with it.”
Ponting’s View on Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Preparation
India and Australia are set to face each other in the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar trophy on November 22. The iconic Optus Stadium is all set to host the match. Players from both teams are all set to showcase their excellence as they are preparing hard. After the whitewash on the home soil, the Indian side is hoping to bounce back. On the other hand, the home side will try hard to win the trophy after a long time.
While talking about the preparation, Ponting said, “Preparation is always a hard one to get right. Because I’ve seen guys like Travis Head in the past where they’ve almost had no preparation at all, going into a game and then turning up and playing one of the all-time great innings.”
Later he added, “You see other guys go in with great form going into a test match and don’t make any runs.”
