The collapse began with Lungi Ngidi dismissing KL Rahul for 9 on the first ball of the 34th over with India 153/5. Ngidi didn’t stop at Rahul. He continued his lethal attack by taking two more wickets in the remaining five balls of the over, dismissing Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, both without adding any runs to the board.
In the very next over, Kagiso Rabada claimed the high-price wicket of Virat Kohli for 46. Amid all this chaos, the unfortunate run-out dismissal of Mohammed Siraj took place. And on the very next ball, Rabada winded up the Indian innings by dismissing Prasidh Krishna for a duck.
Virat Kohli, continuing his good form emerged as the top-scorer for India with 46 runs, while captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 39 and 36 runs. Despite these decent scores, Indian batting collapsed in 34.5 overs with 6 of their batters being dismissed without troubling the scoreboard. India matched the record for most ducks in a Test innings.
They also are the first team to lose 6 wickets without scoring a run in a Test innings. A total of 23 wickets fell during the day’s play. South Africa scored 62-3, trailing by 36, in the second innings before stumps on day 1.
